1st Dan Black Belt Success 2024

Sensei Wayne Teall would like to congratulate Alexander John Rowe on achieving the grade of 1st Dan Black Belt on the 19 September 2024.

Alex has practised Karate for just over 7 years having started training with the Norton Radstock U.B.S.K. Karate Club at Norton Hill School in January 2017.  Alex has worked very hard with his training throughout, achieving a double grade to 8th Kyu on his first ever grading, as well as numerous club awards.

When COVID-19 pandemic descended on the world in the U.B.S.K karate club moved to outdoor training when restrictions allowed, and Alex continued to practise undeterred. However as if that was not enough, Alex then came down with ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, also called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), a condition that causes extreme tiredness, and requires treatments such as medicines, talking therapies, and  managing energy levels.

Despite all of this Alex worked extremely hard to get some normality back in his life and to achieve his goals, one of which was gain his black belt (1st Dan) in Karate, and not only that Alex has also excelled academically having gained a place at Cambridge University.  We are all very proud of Alex and wish him good luck and every success for the future.

Black Belt Achievement for Samuel

Samuel Parsons first came along to the UBSK Norton Radstock Shotokan Karate Club on a Monday night training session to enquire if he could start training at the club, informing Sensei Teall he was already a 1st Dan in Karate, having passed his black belt grading in 2019.  We of course welcomed Samuel and recognised his dan grade achievement from his very first session at the club.  After training with UBSK for a short while it became clear to Samuel that his level of skill wasn’t quite as high as he had thought, and unprompted he approached Sensei Teall to ask if he could start again as a novice! Sensei Teall whilst surprised Samuel wanted to take such a drastic step, when he was already a black belt, agreed that he could, to which Samual replied he felt he was not as good as he should be.  So, for the next 5½ years Samual worked extremely hard, training regularly, until he finally achieved his UBSK first dan black belt on 7 July 2025.   Sensei Wayne Teall 7th Dan UBSK, 5th Dan Shikon Martial Arts, 4th Dan JKA, said “I would like to congratulate Samuel on achieving his black belt with the UBSK, I admire his determination and wish to improve his karate skill and knowledge, and I hope he continues to enjoy his training for many years to come.  Very well done.”
